AOA’s Campaign for Tomorrow – What is it all about?
In 2016, the AOA Campaign for Tomorrow was launched as a new member giving initiative with a goal to raise $8 million by June 2021. Led by AOA Past President C. McCollister Evarts, MD, FAOA, the campaign was started to support current AOA programs and also expand future programming and services for increased member value. Recently, some members have asked about the Campaign for Tomorrow vision and why it was created.
The 21st century has witnessed transformational changes within the AOA. During the past 20 years the AOA has put a major emphasis upon developing the leaders of tomorrow and recognizing the leaders of today. Major leadership programs have been developed including the Resident Leadership Forum, Emerging Leaders Program and others, plus the institution of Own the Bone, the continuation of the AOA’s flagship Traveling Fellowships and the Council of Residency Directors (CORD).
In June 2018, at the AOA Annual Leadership Meetings in Boston, it was announced that the Campaign for Tomorrow has reached nearly half of its $8 million goal with three years remaining!

As corporate funding becomes more challenging to secure, the AOA Development Committee in concert with the Executive Committee, discussed strategies for allowing the organization to be less reliant on industry support, yet continue to expand the valuable resources and programming the membership looks to the AOA to provide.
Upon examining the costs of continuing the AOA programs, it was determined that a secure financial future would be accomplished by a fundraising effort. Member donations are designated to specific programs or Mission Critical Education. The invested funds would allow the organization to access earnings to continue the ever-expanding efforts of the organization.
All donations are maintained in a Restricted Fund that is segregated by specific program support categories, where the donors may direct their contributions. The contributions provide long-term, ongoing support for AOA programs in the amount of 5% of the Fund each year. In 2015, a five-year projection of the financial needs to support the current programs was made resulting in a goal of $8 million for a major AOA fundraising campaign. “The Executive Committee’s decision to launch the Campaign for Tomorrow will seed the continuation and growth of the AOA’s major programs for the next decade,” said Dr. Evarts. “Donations made by our members toward the Campaign for Tomorrow is an investment in the AOA that lives on and nurtures the next generation of orthopaedic leaders.”
For a campaign to be successful, the organization must have a strong financial base, a clear direction, high visibility, donor support, committed leadership, and a team of informed, motivated volunteers. The Campaign for Tomorrow is an extraordinary undertaking requiring significant human capital and precious financial resources – commodities that are scarce in most non-profit organizations.
